Who can participate in Share the Spotlight?
Share the Spotlight is for students currently in 6th to 12th grade (at the time of auditions) and living in Philadelphia. Students should have basic experience on guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboards, or vocals. Admission is based on an audition. Tuition is entirely free.
What level of experience should students have?
Students should have at least some basic experience with their instrument and, most importantly, be highly motivated to practice and learn new parts. Share the Spotlight mixes students of varying ability levels and instructors are available for extra help.
How do I audition?

What if I’m having trouble playing through my audition song?
Share the Spotlight accepts students of many skill levels. We are looking for effort and motivation! Practice your song to the best of your ability. Mistakes and simplified parts when performing your audition selection are okay. But, we expect students to be prepared and to have worked hard on their audition material.
What if I don’t have my own instrument?
Share the Spotlight provides all instruments needed for rehearsals and the final show, but you are encouraged to bring your own guitar or bass. We provide loaner guitars and basses to students for the summer if needed, so that you can practice at home.
What are rehearsals like?
Rehearsals are two hours, twice a week and are fast-paced. Students are assigned songs to play in a rock band format, and are responsible for working on their parts on their own at home, but instructors are always available to help out as needed. Rehearsals are in a fully-equipped studio. When a student has free time between songs, they can practice individually or together or hang out with other students.
When are rehearsals?
Schedule for the 2020 Season:
Rehearsals are Mondays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 pm. Rehearsals are Thursday, June 11th through Thursday, August 6th. Dress rehearsal is Friday, August 7th from 5 to 7 pm. The final show is Saturday, August 8th (time TBA).
Where are rehearsals?
In Philadelphia, Share the Spotlight rehearsals are at Keystone Soundworks at 4900 Longshore Avenue in the Tacony neighborhood. Keystone Soundworks is a professional recording studio with two rehearsal studios and a smaller lounge area for working individually or in small groups.
What if I have to miss some rehearsals?
We encourage students to attend all rehearsals. However, two excused absences are allowed during the season. Dress rehearsal and the final show are mandatory.
What is the final show like?
Share the Spotlight’s final show is at a real rock venue (such as World Cafe Live), with professional lighting and sound. Students promote the show and can invite their families and friends. We usually have a very large, enthusiastic audience!
What does it cost?
Share the Spotlight is completely tuition free. It is funded entirely by our generous donors.
What do students gain from the experience?
Students musical skills improve quickly as the result of working in a fast-paced, ensemble-based environment. Students have a chance to showcase their individual talents, as well as become a supportive part of an ensemble. They have the chance to perform in a professional venue. In addition to showing great improvement in their skills throughout the summer, many past students have described the performance experience as “life-changing”, and an amazing way to build confidence both on and off stage.
