FAQ

Who can participate in Share the Spotlight?

Share the Spotlight is for students currently in 6th to 12th grade (at the time of auditions) in New York City or Philadelphia. Students should have basic experience on guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboards, or vocals. Admission is based on an audition.

What level of experience should students have?

Students should have at least some basic experience with their instrument and, most importantly, be highly motivated to practice and learn new parts. Share the Spotlight mixes students of varying ability levels and instructors are available for extra help.

How do I audition?

For details about auditioning and to sign up for an audition, check here.

We partner with the following schools: The Equity Project, Franklin Learning Center, Multicultural Arts Academy, New Foundations Charter School, Tompkins Square Middle School, and The Young Women’s Leadership School network.

If you attend these schools we often hold auditions in school. Please ask your music teacher for more information.

What if I'm having trouble playing through my audition song?

Share the Spotlight accepts students of many skill levels. We are looking for effort and motivation! Practice your song to the best of your ability. Mistakes and simplified parts when performing your audition selection are okay. But, we expect students to be prepared and to have worked hard on their audition material.

What if I don't have my own instrument?

Share the Spotlight provides all instruments needed for rehearsals and the final show, but you are welcome to bring your own guitar or bass. We provide loaner guitars and basses to students for the summer, so that you can practice at home.

What are rehearsals like?

Rehearsals are two hours, twice a week and are fast-paced. Students are assigned songs to play in a rock band format, and are responsible for working on their parts on their own, but instructors are always available to help out as needed. Rehearsals are in a fully-equipped studio. When a student has free time between songs, they can practice individually or together or hang out with other students.

What do students gain from the experience?

Students musical skills improve quickly as the result of working in a fast-paced, ensemble-based environment. Students have a chance to showcase their individual talents, as well as become a supportive part of an ensemble. They have the chance to perform in a professional venue. In addition to showing great improvement in their skills throughout the summer, many past students have described the performance experience as “life-changing”, and an amazing way to build confidence both on and off stage.
